Special Project:
Haiti Relief
On Jan. 12, 2010, a major earthquake struck the island nation of Haiti. The quake’s center hit just 10 miles south of Port-au-Prince, the capital of this already-impoverished country.
Now, nearly three million people are in need of aid.
The Angel Network does not have a formal relief program nor does it typically support relief efforts. However, because of the special nature of this crisis, the Angel Network made a $1 million contribution to the American Red Cross to support the relief effort.
How You Can Help
If you want to contribute to the relief efforts in Haiti, the Angel Network recommends donating to the Red Cross, as well as to the charities listed below. The Angel Network recommends these charities because of their experience in relief efforts and/or their long-standing presence in Haiti. Some of these charities are also former Angel Network grantees.
- AmeriCares is an international relief organization that delivers medicine, medical supplies and aid to people in crisis. AmeriCares is sending $5 million in the form of medical aid and in disaster relief modules, stocked with emergency medicines and medical supplies, to Haiti. Since 1982, AmeriCares has delivered more than $7 billion in humanitarian aid to 137 countries.
- CARE International began working in Haiti in 1954. At the time the earthquake struck, CARE had a very strong presence with over 113 local staff and five operating offices on the ground. CARE is committed to a long-term engagement, intending to raise $41 million dollars to ensure that Haitians are not abandoned after immediate needs for food water and shelter are met. - Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has three hospital structures in Haiti, including a trauma center and a maternity hospital, and had nearly 800 staff on the ground in Port-au-Prince at the time the earthquake hit. MSF has dispatched 70 additional staff members, including several surgical teams. They have also delivered a 100-bed inflatable tent hospital with two operating rooms.
- Friends of World Food Program (WFP), an Angel Network grantee, unites organizations and individuals committed to solving world hunger. WFP is deploying resources to Haiti in addition to airlifting 95 tons of food from their emergency hub in El Salvador, which will provide more than half a million emergency meals. In the initial stages of this crisis, WFP provided significant quantities of ready to eat food. Angel Network grantee
- Partners In Health (PIH) has worked in Haiti since 1985, where they have 100 doctors and 600 nurses. Also, PIH founder Dr. Paul Farmer is currently serving with President Clinton as the Deputy Special Envoy to the UN for Haiti. PIH’s work is now a model for healthcare for poor communities worldwide.
- Save the Children has worked in Haiti for 25 years, providing vulnerable children with health, education, protection and food security programs. In the wake of the Haiti earthquake, Save the Children is providing immediate lifesaving assistance, such as food, water, shelter and child-friendly spaces. Angel Network grantee
