To purchase and distribute books to children who participate in the Monterey County Reads reading program. This grant was presented in conjunction with the Oprah's Book Club selection "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck.
The Panetta Institute is a center for the study of public policy aimed at helping communities and the country meet the challenges of the 21st Century. The Panetta Institute coordinates the Monterey County Reads program in cooperation with the county's Office of Education. This literacy program trains and places volunteers in grade schools to work with underserved children.
