Earth Day Stories

To celebrate Earth Day, we asked Angel Network community members to share stories about what they’re doing to make a difference in the environment. We’re excited that so many of you are taking actions with the environment in mind.

Read on to find out what members are doing, and get inspired to take your own actions.

At a "one stop donation drop," people are encouraged to bring all types of items—from games and books to cell phones.

What Members Are Doing

A member in Pennsylvania came up with the idea to host a “one stop donation drop” the weekend before Earth Day. She encouraged people to bring all types of items—bicycles, winter clothing, books, sewing machines, sports equipment, eyeglasses, etc.—to a local community center. “It’s a win-win-win. Unwanted items go to people in need. These items get a second life and stay out of landfills. We do something good for our community,” she says. “The best part of this idea is that it’s something that can be done in any community.”

A member from California shared that every Sunday, the Rock Church recycles used cans and bottles received from the community and members of the church. The money raised goes toward sponsoring more than 20 children in Africa through World Vision.

Pictured here are boxes of used handbags that the organization Handbags of Hope will recycle, fill with functional items and then give to women in need.

A member from Michigan told us about Handbags of Hope, an organization that recycles women’s used handbags and wallets. She says, “We fill them with functional items and then [the purses and wallets] are given to women and teens in shelter situations. Police departments give them to purse snatching victims. In one year we grew from 115 to 1,223 handbags donated to shelters for the holidays.”
